HLF Daily Recap – Monday
Monday’s scientific program at the HLF began with a lecture by ACM A.M. Turing Award and Nevanlinna Prize recipient Robert Endre Tarjan, who spoke on “Strong Components Via Depth-First Search”.
This was followed by a Laureate Discussion, featuring an all-Turing Award recipient panel consisting of Vinton Gray Cerf (ACM A.M. Turing Award – 2004), Leslie Lamport (ACM A.M. Turing Award – 2013) and Joseph Sifakis (ACM A.M. Turing Award – 2007) – moderated by Vicki Hanson, CEO of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
The laureates discussed their body of work, the developments that have occurred in their fields since they received their respective Turing Awards and reflected on some of the most pressing issues in the world of computer science today, including the ethics of AI.
Up next was the Lindau Lecture, held each year to signify the close bond between the Heidelberg Laureate Forum and the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Holding the Lindau Lecture this year was astrophysicist and Nobel Prize recipient Reinhard Genzel, who spoke on “The 40-Year Journey” he and his colleagues have been on to study the mass distribution in the center of the Milky Way.
Antonia Mey of IMAGINARY presented the exhibition developed by the non-profit group, entitled “I AM A.I. – Explaining Artificial intelligence”. Usually on display at the Mathematics-Informatics Station (MAINS), part of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation, it has taken up temporary residence in the Senate Hall of the Old University building as part of the week of the HLF and has already begun to draw large numbers of visitors.
The afternoon was marked by programs specifically directed at the attending young researchers: first, they engaged in a short session of “Speed Networking”, and afterwards were granted the opportunity to present their own research in the Poster Flash and Poster Session respectively.
Closing out the day was a tour through the picturesque city of Heidelberg, followed by a Welcome Dinner.
